ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). It provides a framework for organizations to identify, manage, control and improve environmental performance in a structured and auditable way. The 2026 edition is the fourth edition of the standard. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 and incorporates the 2024 Climate Change Amendment. The revised standard retains the same overall purpose and PDCA structure while clarifying requirements and strengthening expectations in areas such as environmental context, environmental conditions, life-cycle perspective, change management, externally provided processes, and alignment with the ISO Harmonized Structure.

Yes. ISO 14001:2015 certificates will remain valid for three years from the publication date of the 2026 edition, until approximately April 2029. After that, certificates issued to the 2015 edition will no longer be valid. All certified organizations must complete their transition to ISO 14001:2026 before the deadline.

ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026. The transition period is expected to be 36 months, with transition completed by April 2029. CWB Registration will confirm specific transition arrangements, dates, audit rules and certificate rules in accordance with applicable accreditation-body and IAF requirements.

ISO 14001:2026 is an update, not a complete rewrite. The overall structure and intent of the standard remain familiar, but several requirements have been clarified or strengthened. The main changes include:

  • clearer expectations for organizations to consider environmental conditions such as climate change, pollution levels, natural resource availability, biodiversity, and ecosystem health when reviewing their context;
  • a stronger link between EMS scope, life-cycle perspective, and the organization’s ability to control or influence environmental impacts;
  • a separated and clarified requirement for risks and opportunities in Clause 6.1.4;
  • a new Clause 6.3 on planning EMS-related changes; and
  • updated Clause 8.1 language covering externally provided processes, products, and services rather than only outsourced processes.

The revision also includes terminology and documented information updates, such as “meet compliance obligations” instead of “fulfill compliance obligations.”

No. Transitioning to ISO 14001:2026 does not mean you have to start the certification process over. Transition is completed through a targeted approach that focuses specifically on the differences between the 2015 and 2026 editions. Your existing Environmental Management System documentation, processes, and audit history remain valid and form the foundation for your transition.

In many cases, yes. CWB Group’s registration auditors can help you assess whether your transition audit can be incorporated into an upcoming surveillance or recertification audit. Combining audits can reduce costs, simplify scheduling, and avoid the need for a separate audit. This is one of the many advantages of acting early rather than waiting until the transition deadline approaches.

The recommended first step is a gap assessment: a structured review of your current EMS against the requirements of the ISO 14001:2026. A gap assessment will identify which elements of your system need to be updated, documented, or added before you undergo a transition audit. CWB Registration can support gap assessment process. As a certification body, CWB Registration must maintain impartiality and cannot provide consulting or implement EMS changes for clients. Organizations that need implementation support should use appropriate independent resources.

The timeline varies by organization size, complexity of operations, and how closely our current EMS already aligns with the new requirements. For many organizations, gap assessment and documentation updates can be completed in a matter of weeks. Scheduling the transition audit itself will depend on auditor availability. Starting the process now gives your organization the most flexibility and access to available audit dates.

After the transition deadline, ISO 14001:2015 certificates are expected to no longer remain valid. Certificates that have not been transitioned may be subject to suspension, withdrawal or other actions in accordance with applicable accreditation and certification rules. Missing the deadline may also affect contractual requirements, customer expectations, tender eligibility or other commitments linked to ISO 14001 certification.

A revision to ISO 9001 is expected. Organizations certified to both ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 should consider transition planning across their integrated management system. CWB Registration will provide further guidance on ISO 9001 once the revised standard and related transition requirements are confirmed.

Yes. Work completed to address ISO 14001:2015/AMD 1:2024 remains relevant and provides a useful foundation for transition. ISO 14001:2026 incorporates the climate change amendment and broadens the context discussion to include other relevant environmental conditions, such as pollution levels, natural resource availability, biodiversity and ecosystem health, where applicable to the organization.

Additional audit time, if required, will be determined on a client-specific basis in accordance with applicable accreditation requirements and CWB Registration transition arrangements. Factors can include organization size, number of sites, EMS complexity, maturity of the system, audit cycle timing and the extent of changes needed.

Yes, in a potentially positive way. Organizations with integrated systems covering ISO 14001 alongside ISO 9001, ISO 45001 or other standards may already have processes that support several of the revised requirements. For example, the explicit requirement for planning changes in Clause 6.3 may align with existing change-management controls in an integrated system.
